At least 24 notice hour cancellation policy is required. Missed appointments with no notice might be invoiced.
All of our procedures, apart from conservative care, are done under local anaesthetic which means you won’t be able to feel anything during the procedure – just like getting a filling at the dentist. The anaesthetic is injected using a small, fine needle to make it as comfortable as possible with minimal pain. After the procedures, once the anaesthetic wears off, non-aspirin based painkillers can be taken if needed. For the conservative procedure, only a small piece of the ingrowing nail is removed quickly and efficiently for immediate relief and any discomfort is short-lived.
Aside from the time it takes to perform your procedure (approximately 60 minutes), no you don’t need to take any additional time off work or school. We do, however, recommend taking it easy on your feet for the rest of the day following your procedure and resting as much as possible. Some jobs are better suited to allow this than others, so please use your discretion to allow the healing and repair to begin and achieve healing in the fastest time possible. Because conservative treatments are very minimally invasive, most patients return to work immediately with no issues, even with jobs that see them on their feet for the rest of the day. Just ensure your footwear is not tight around the toes.
For conservative treatments, absolutely. We do, however, recommend that the shoes are not too tight around the toes so not to irritate the wound and allow it to heal. For PNA and TNA procedures, yes you can wear any shoes as long as they can accommodate the dressed toe. The dressings are relatively thick for the first few days and you want to avoid pressure on the affected toe as much as possible to achieve the quickest healing time. It can take a week to change from the thicker dressing to a simple thin dressing so you will need to be mindful of your footwear choice in this time. For shoes with a good, spacious toe-box, this isn’t usually an issue. For shoes that have narrow, tight or pointed toes, you may need to look for a comfortable temporary alternative. You will be able to feel the difference in your toe with different shoes so can use that as a guide to help direct your choice of footwear.
While most people can undergo these procedures, some exceptions do exist. This is mainly those with a very limited blood supply to their feet that impairs their ability to heal. Those with a poor track record of healing wounds on the feet or with non-healing foot and leg ulcers will be examined thoroughly by our podiatrists to determine their eligibility for these procedures. A person will only be deemed unfit for these procedures where the risks of not healing outweigh the benefits of the procedure and it is deemed unsafe for them. Even then, they may still be able to have conservative ingrown nail care to alleviate their pain and discomfort. If you fall into this category, your podiatrist will discuss everything with you during your appointment.
All procedures and appointments are carried out in our suite at the One Health Building at 122 Remuera Road. We thoroughly prepare and set up for every procedure using the highest of safety and hygiene protocols and take comprehensive documentation of every step.
PNA and TNA procedures take approximately 60 minutes in total, though the actual time that we are working on your toe usually takes 15 – 25 minutes. The rest of the time is spent on preparing the foot/nail, administering anaesthetic and having it set, dressing the toe, and going through all of your aftercare instructions. A conservative nail care appointment is completed within 30 minutes in total.
Absolutely. Each procedure is grounded in clinical evidence and a long history of successful outcomes in the field of podiatry. As board-certified podiatrists, we comply with every safety and hygiene protocol and requirement, which are extensively documented and audited regularly. Furthermore, your podiatrist assesses each person and nail thoroughly and uses their years of clinical experience to ensure maximum safety. Safety is a high priority for us and is non-negotiable, hence the exclusion of certain individuals from the eligibility of our procedures where safety may be compromised.
For conservative care appointments, the recovery time is very minimal and usually ranges from one to several days. For TNA’s and PNA’s, the recovery can be anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on the type of procedure and the severity of the problem. Your podiatrist will be able to give you a more definitive time estimate once they have examined your toe.

Yes, we are recognised health practitioners so if you have podiatry cover, your policy may cover your procedure. You will need to check with your specific insurer and we can provide you with all the information your require to check your coverage.
Yes, of course. We treat hundreds of kids every year that are suffering from ingrown toenails. The type of procedure that is most suitable will be determined on a case by case basis and will be guided by age and history. For first-time ingrown toenails or young children, conservative nail care is usually the best option.
We will assess the extent of the infection and severity of the problem and discuss with you the best treatment options at your appointment. About 50% of ingrown toenails that we see are infected so coming in to see us when you have an infection is no problem. Depending on your medical history, we may need the infection to clear before being able to perform your procedure. Everyone is assessed on a case-by-case basis by our experienced team of podiatrists.
Most conservative care appointments do not need a follow-up appointment unless any issues arise or the ingrown toenail comes back. For PNA’s & TNA’s, a dressing change is required within the first 2 days following the procedure. No other follow-ups are required unless any problems arise.
If your procedure does not include a chemical matrixectomy, then yes the ingrown toenail may come back. This is because the nail-producing cells on the edge of the nail may have become damaged or distorted over time and now produce a nail that curves down or has a tendency to grow in. Various other factors, such as continuing to wear tight footwear or curving your nails when you trim them can also encourage the development of ingrown toenails again. The chance of your ingrown toenail recurring is very, however still possible in a small percentage of cases. This is because the nail growing cells on the edges of the nails are destroyed in a chemical matrixectomy, meaning the nail just grows straight from the remaining cells. In some cases, however, the body may repair the nail-growing cells so they may continue to keep growing the nail. This is largely dependent on your body’s ability to heal and so is largely out of our control. We can confidently say that for 9 in 10 people that have a chemical matrixectomy as part of their procedure, the ingrown portion of the toenail does not come back.
